A little update

It seems incredible, but I'm writing this post in a small town called Kagbeni, 3850 meters high in the Himalayas - and here they have Wifi-facilities! Yes, the Annapurna curcuit is a quite comfortable trek (if one doesn't need hot showers every day, and assumes the daily 5-8 hours walking distances, of course!)
Today is my 12th day of trekking, and I'm taking a rest day after the toughest part of the trek: crossing the Thorong La pass at 5416 meters. Wow, it was a real effort and gives me even more respect for the mountaineers who climb up to 8000 meters or more, and who don't even have all the luxury I am having on this trek: a clearly marked path, lodges for the night, warm meals two times a day... I really only had to bring my sleeping bag and clothes (and lots of bandaids, tape and antiseptic cream for my blisters - ouch!!!).
Even so, the trek is challenging, if only because of the high altitude I was gaining quite quickly and where thin air and the threat of altitude sickness make the trekking much slower. The temperature also changed a lot: Whereas I started my trek in T-shirt and sweating at 25°, two days ago it snowed so hard on the pass that we were not sure if we could cross it. The previous night before the crossing I spent in a room so cold that the snow I had brought in with my shoes hadn't melted the next morning!
The Annapurna circuit is all as beautiful as I expected it to be. It is amazing how the landscape changes slowly while walking through it, always the snowcaped mountains in the background. I have still several days ahead - hopefully time enough to say a slow goodbye to the wonderful Annapurnas!
